Egyptian-Sudanese emphasis on the centrality of water security

Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Badr Abdel Aati confirmed today, Monday, that his country will continue to stand by Sudan in light of the delicate circumstances and dangerous historical turning point it is going through until it overcomes this difficult stage.

This came during a phone call made by Abdel-Ati today with Ali Youssef Ahmed Al-Sharif, the new acting Sudanese Foreign Minister, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman’s office.

Abdel-Ati stressed the special nature of Egyptian-Sudanese relations, appreciating the deep historical ties between the two countries, whether at the governmental or popular levels.

According to the statement, the two ministers reviewed the latest developments in the internal situation in Sudan, as Abdel Aati expressed Egypt’s full support for Sudanese institutions, and stressed the need to respect Sudanese sovereignty and the unity and integrity of its territories.

The two ministers exchanged views on a number of regional issues, and stressed the centrality of the water issue for Egypt and Sudan as downstream countries. The call reflected a complete convergence of views between the two countries regarding the issue of water security, which is an existential issue for both countries.
